The LAB is an interactive learning centre in the National Aquarium of New Zealand, in Napier.
Step into the LAB and discover more about earthquakes, tsunami and volcanic eruptions. Find out where the latest earthquakes have occurred, watch a tsunami wave demonstration, learn about scientists’ latest discoveries, and become a scientist yourself. Bring your family and friends to the LAB and uncover which lies beneath the ocean. The LAB is open 7 days a week from 8.30am-5.00pm.
The National Aquarium of New Zealand offers students a unique and stimulating educational experience outside of the classroom. Students have the opportunity to participate in a hands-on hazard/disasters education session called the 'Life at the Boundary' education programme.
In the Life at the Boundary - East Coast LAB programme students uncover more about earthquakes, tsunami and volcanic eruptions. They’ll learn about scientists’ latest discoveries and become scientists themselves – bring your students for a natural hazards education experience at LAB!
Hands-on and engaging activities will set a solid framework for their learning: they'll mix various ingredients to create their own volcano; cause a tsunami; and build examples of strong and weak houses to see which is strongest in an earthquake. At the end of the programme, a challenge will be presented to students to develop their own action plan at home.
There are programmes for both primary-intermediate and secondary level students.
