Free ‘Hands-on’ science workshop at the LAB

Hawke’s Bay children are being given the chance to learn more about the forces beneath their feet that cause earthquakes, tsunami and volcanoes.

East Coast LAB is holding a series of free science workshops for 8 to 11 year olds, in the LAB at the National Aquarium of New Zealand in Napier.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn about earthquakes, tsunami, volcanoes and science at sea during the two-hour workshops, which will include fun hands-on activities.

During the earthquake and tsunami workshop, participants will create their own tsunami wave and even use a real seismometer.

The workshops will be run science educator Jake Brookie who is excited to show participants how to make an undersea volcano model and teach them about the different types of volcanic rocks

During the 'Science at Sea' programme students will take part in a video link with the research vessel 'JOIDES Resolution' and talk to scientists on board the ship researching the Hikurangi plate boundary off the East Coast.

Earthquakes & Tsunami:  Sunday 11th of February from 1pm-3pm FULL

Science at Sea: Sunday 18th of March 10am-12pm FULL

Volcanoes: Sunday 15th of April from 1pm-3pm FULL

These workshops have been developed by East Coast LAB (Life at the Boundary) to help raise knowledge and awareness of natural hazards and their impacts. The LAB is a natural hazards education display at the National Aquarium of New Zealand. It is open to the public 7 days a week from 8.30am-5.00pm.
