Young scientists have been making tsunami waves in the wave tank, shaking things up with their ‘earthquake proof buildings’ and having a blast with volcanoes at a series of free hands-on science sessions at the LAB, National Aquarium of New Zealand.
The once-a-month science sessions aimed at 8 to 11 year olds to give participants the opportunity to learn about earthquakes, tsunami and volcanoes at each two-hour workshop.
The sessions have proven so popular that East Coast LAB has decided to extend the sessions for another three month period.
Educator Jake Brookie, who hosts each session, says he is pleased with how well supported each workshop has been and hopes that the new topics will be just as popular.
All workshops have a ‘hands-on’ component with activities including creating a miniature volcano, making a room earthquake safe and coastal erosion experiments.
The available Hands-on Science sessions are:
Ring of Fire: Sunday 27th May from 1-3pm BOOKED OUT
Hazards happen: Sunday 17th June from 1-3pm
Rising seas: Sunday 15th July from 1-3pm BOOKED OUT
Spaces are limited so bookings are essential. To book simply fill out the registration form HERE.
These workshops have been developed by East Coast LAB (Life at the Boundary) to help raise knowledge and awareness of natural hazards and their impacts.
