Do you live, work, or learn in a tsunami zone, in Te Matau-a-Māui Hawke's Bay, Tairāwhiti Gisborne, or Ōtautahi Christchurch?
You could help make everyone safer by collecting data for the Quicker Safer Tsunami project, led by GNS Science, Massey University, and the University of Canterbury. You can do this by practicing your Tsunami Hīkoi and recording it on STRAVA. Once you've recorded your Hīkoi, just add Quicker Safer Tsunami Evacuation and tag us in your Hīkoi. By tagging us, you have given your consent for us to collect the GPX data from this specific walk, and use it only for the purpose of this study.
For more information about the project, check out the project page, and for more information on taking part, including instructions for using Strava, download the factsheet here:
Get Involved - Citizen science
This project seeks to understand tsunami evacuation behaviour in Aotearoa New Zealand by combining computational modelling with local context and knowledge. The team of scientists will model large-scale tsunami evacuation, and will use GPS data collected by citizens to improve this model and ensure it represents the actual environment and people as realistically as possible.
