Knowing The Risks

School children on the East Coast of the North Island have had the chance to learn more about tsunami and earthquakes thanks to the pilot Tairuamoko roadshow recently. A team from the National Aquarium of New Zealand, Hawke’s Bay and Gisborne Civil Defence Emergency Management and local kaumatua worked with 15 schools along the East Coast to teach children and teachers how tectonic plates work and how to prepare for and what to do in an earthquake or tsunami. The roadshow team said there was a fantastic response to their interactive visits and they were treated to haka and waiata performances on every stop.
