Tectonic Plates

Tectonic plates move about very slowly - between 0 to 100mm per year. This movement is most obvious at the boundaries (where two plates met). There are three main types of boundaries:

  • Divergent – where two tectonic plates move away from each other.
  • Transform – where two plates slide against each other in opposite directions.
  • Convergent –  where two tectonic plates push together.
